Thread #68 The Big Picture
It seems like the church in many places today has gone off message. Or maybe it is better to say that we have lost our core message from God and are scrambling around to find something that will appeal to the world and make them like us. Personal happiness, healthy marriages, success in life–all these are important things but are just an extension of the general “me-focus” that has poisoned the world anyway. What was the core message of the ancient Christian movement? That message cut through all the clutter and caused even emperors to sit back and listen. Thread #62: Acts: Returning to the prototype of the Church
Big Thread News! We now have a Facebook group. And… a flashy new app in theAndroid Marketplace. It gives access to all Thread podcasts and the ability to rate, comment and post directly via Twitter, FB and email. Try it out if you have an Android phone.
Our new study , the book of Acts is important because it gives us a journal of the earliest attempt to live out the teachings of Jesus–the prototype. This group understood Christ’s teachings the best because they actually knew him and had heard him teach in person. I am certain this has happened in Christianity. On the one hand we have the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus recorded in the gospels. On the other hand we have a thing called Christianity which is the combination of the religion about Jesus plus culture. It exists in Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, Protestant, Evangelical and Pentecostal versions. You have Mennonites and the Amish. Monks and Priests. Temples and churches worshipping in gymnasiums. Each will give you their defense of why their version is correct. What I want to make certain is that I am following the way of Jesus. As hard as it is to do, I want to try to strip away what has grown to be Christianity and get back to the original germ of the movement.

Brooke’s 18th Avatar Birthday
Celebrate with us! Brooke turns 18 today. She decided that she wants an Avatar theme event so first Sherry had to source blue paint (ended up with silk screen plastic based paint so we’ll see if they have all over acne for the next week), glue guns, sling shots and foliage for costume making.
Then it is off to the state park and waterfall where they can run through the woods. Wonder what the local forest service will think all of this is…new tales of strange creatures in the woods? More later after the event…

Thread #29 Don’t say IF…
“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Is your mind full of confidence or muddled by doubt and double-mindedness? In this episode of Thread we observe the tremendous power of positivity, unwavering childlike faith in God’s benevolent sovereignty toward us. That faith releases the flow of God’s miraculous grace and fights back the attacks of the enemy against us. We will also observe the power of anti-faith, doubt and disbelief, to nullify the creative work God intends for us to receive. Faith or doubt? Its up to us. Listen for more…

C.S. Lewis on our Religion–CQ
Every day I say to God, “I love you, Lord.” I’m not exactly sure what I mean by that though. Maybe “I’m grateful”? The problem lies in my extremely imperfect attempt to love God or anyone else for that matter. To illustrate: I love this CS Lewis quote (italics mine):
“All this is flashy rhetoric about loving you.
I never had a selfless thought since I was born.
I am mercenary and self-seeking through and through….
I cannot crawl one inch outside my proper skin;
I talk of love– a scholar’s parrot may talk Greek–”
The parrot just repeats words he has heard in his master’s study but he doesn’t really have any real idea of what Homer was talking about. I have heard about ‘loving the Lord’ all my life. I hope to really do it sometime in my life. Really to love God more than me and to totally release myself into Him and make Him my everything–with absolutely no reference to myself or what i get out of this relationship. There’s just so much self-interest and reward even in my religion. Guess that’s what total depravity is all about in theology….
When I was a kid I heard someone preaching and he said this, “I dealt with the sin question long ago.” Even as a child I didn’t believe him. It’s not that sin reigns in me. It can’t make me do anything. The choices are now my own….but truly to rid myself of self…its like trying to take all the salt out of the sea. I mean I try…but there’s just always more salt in the water somehow. (Yes I do fully understand that I am saved by Grace. I have just been at this for 30 years now and I am still selfish and the minute I stop watching over it, self takes charge again.) That’s my experience. Maybe this is my prayer for the night.
How do we really break outside being the center of our world? Of seeing everyone else and their importance through the lens of their relationship to me…Has anyone really ever done it?
I think too much at 1:30am, but these are pretty good thoughts… Thanks, Mr. Lewis, for the honesty. You’ve had my head spinning for the last two days since I read your poem. Amen.
Thread #19: Transfer of Authority
For the first year Jesus did all the ministry. He preached, healed the sick and cast out the demons. He faced all contrary people and reasoned with them in open debate. Then in the second year he turned to the disciples and said to them, “Now, you do it.” I’m sure they were shocked and afraid at the prospect of attempting such a thing, but Jesus gave them his healing power and told them what sermon to preach and sent them to do it–and the results multiplied. Now they could be in six villages each day instead of one. Their impact was so great that even King Herod heard about them. That’s what happens when ministry is multiplied versus just adding converts. Jesus will make you competent to do His ministry. This Thread deals with entering Christ’s ministry.

Thread #18: The Importance of Faith
Bible study for grown ups. Ever been around a person of tenacious faith? They are contagious in their optimism and their confidence that in the end, God will make it all work out well. These people are the life-changers for others fortunate enough to live around them. They are the world-changers. In a world of doubters and God haters, people of faith encourage God. I want to be that person, don’t you? Listen to this episode from Mark 5 and see how faith grows and works in every day life.

Thread #16: Filled with Self-Pity or Filled with Faith?
Every life knows stress and anxiety. We all encounter setbacks and times when everything seems to be working against us. These events are the defining moments in our lives. Some people allow themselves to habitually slip into powerlessness and self-pity, questioning God and blaming others for their problems. They choose to see personal challenges as tragedies and cry out, “Why me!?” In these same circumstances, however, champions arise, controlling their emotions and choosing to think and speak thoughts of faith and trust in God. They expect that ultimately all things will turn and work together for them because they are the children of God. Summoning up their energy, they confront their problems with authority and emerge victorious on higher ground. Need a lesson on this? Check out this week’s Thread and learn from Jesus, the Master of Storms.

Spiritual Children
This is a shot of Sherry with two of her Filipino daughters, Sarita and Tess. She has spent countless hours mothering both of them through many years and we are both so proud of how their lives have turned out. They have chosen a path of integrity and have served the Lord and love people with all their energies. I don’t think there is anything more meaningful in our lives than pouring all we have learned into others who want to take it in. Spiritual children are a great part of the overall legacy of our lives. You just need to create some open space, time and attention in your heart and find a heart connection with someone ten years or more behind you.
Open your home up to them. Share food. Ask for their story. Pray for them. Keep in touch. It will just develop at its own pace according to the need of the learner. If you have made a sincere effort to walk with God and learn from Him and His wise people, then you owe it to the next generation to pass it on.
If you aren’t already doing this ask the Lord to give you at least as a spiritual child in addition to the blessing of natural children you may have also received.
Thread #14: On Receiving Revelation from God
Are you interested in having God talk to you and reveal his will and his ways? He longs to do this, but there are some preconditions for you to follow if you would like to receive from him. In this lesson Jesus explains how two people can hear the same message, yet one takes it to heart and get so much benefit while the other finds it boring or even offensive. Find out why on today’s Thread.

Quinley Road

As a child I grew up disconnected from my extended family. I had an unusual name and no other Quinley in my school, my town, the city of Atlanta (2 million) or anywhere else in the entire southeast as far as I knew. But then there was Bay Minette, Alabama. This is a small farming community. The entire phone book was a round ¼ inch thick but I stared at the pages with amazement at line upon lines of Quinleys. They were an expressive bunch and I loved every visit whether in Summer go help harvest and can vegetables or in winter for Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays which meant great food and an unheated house with big beds and, no lie, at least one inch of quilts on the bed. It was so heavy you could not turn after being tucked in . The adults would stack us in bed like sardines in a tin and in the morning roll the covers down and pop us out. One day the US Post Office decided to do away with all the old RFD addresses. They began naming each road by the name of the family who lived at its end. Thus came Quinley Road into existence. I still feel proud every time I pass the signs.
