Thread #71: A Healthy Church

The greatest gift you can give to your community is to be part of strengthening or planting a life-giving church.  There is no social unit with any more capacity to be a source of positive change in the lives of hundreds.  In this Thread we look at how the very first Christians “did church.”  You may be in for some surprises.

Thread #70 Giving Spiritual Direction to Others

You want to make a difference in the lives of others. So you pray for them and love them and hope that one day the door will open for you to share your faith with them. You know that you aren’t perfect and maybe have never received any training in how to do all of this, yet somehow God has chosen to use you anyway. When that door opens what do you say?  This week’s Thread observes Simon Peter as he shares Christ with a crowd of onlookers.  Learn from the way he connected with his listeners and from the strong spiritual direction he provided for them on that day.

Thread #69 Preaching Christ

Is it possible that Jesus may be one of the ways to reach God but that if people are sincere enough God will recognize their efforts and that way will lead to Him also?  The early church was crystal clear on the doctrine of Christ.  They knew who Jesus was and did not waver in their presentation of his unique position as the God/Man.  Listen to this week’s Thread and strengthen your grip on Christ.

Thread #68 The Big Picture

It seems like the church in many places today has gone off message.  Or maybe it is better to say that we have lost our core message from God and are scrambling around to find something that will appeal to the world and make them like us.  Personal happiness, healthy marriages, success in life–all these are important things but are just an extension of the general “me-focus” that has poisoned the world anyway.   What was the core message of the ancient Christian movement?  That message cut through all the clutter and caused even emperors to sit back and listen. Check out this week’s Thread podcast, The Big Picture, for more.

Thread #66 The God Part

Tired of a man-centered approach to spirituality? Even wonder if church is just something we invented? When was the last time God showed up in power and glory during congregational worship or you own time alone with God? The “real thing” has a human part and a God Part. We can’t do the God part and we dare not fabricate something like the Wizzard of Oz did where a mere man/woman hides behind a curtain and puts on a big show pretending to be God and most people never know the difference. If you are hungry to see God move in power and manifest presence tune in to this episode of Thread.

Thread #65: Stepping Up to Lead

It’s natural for anyone to recoil at being the one in charge. The Bible is filled with stories of leaders who started off hesitantly, knowing the cost associated with being the point person. If you are called though, there is an unavoidable day when you need to stand up and willingly accept the role of leader and take control of the ship for the benefit of others and to insure the mission.

Are you supposed to take the lead? Is it your calling? That’s what you have to know. Leadership roles don’t last forever. You step into them and later you need to turn things over to someone else, but for your season you need to have a conviction that being the leader is, in fact, God’s calling on your life.

That’s what happened to Peter, the Apostle in this episode of Thread. You can find the Thread podcast on the ITunes network by clicking here To sign up for the Quinley monthly e-letter with pictures and videos just fill in the sign up on Quinley.com

Thread #64: Aligning Yourself To Receive Power and Direction from God

Need to receive a fresh empowering for your mission, need clarity about what you are supposed to be doing in 2012? This episode of Thread will show you the pattern of the early church as they aligned themselves to be in a position to receive from God. Nobody can make God speak or act, but He has promised to respond to us once we get into the right posture before Him.

Thread #63: Taking Up the Mantle of Jesus

Acts is the second half in a two-part history written by Luke on Jesus and his followers as they spread across the ancient world.  Some call Luke’s the “Charismatic gospel” because Luke is keen to show the work of the Holy Spirit in the ministry of Jesus: born by a miracle of the Holy Spirit, called by the Spirit, filled with the Spirit, Guided by the Spirit, Empowered to prophesy and heal by the Holy Spirit, filled with boldness to confront wickedness wrapped in religion and even strengthened by the Holy Spirit to face death on the cross, then raised by the Spirit back to eternal physical life.

Acts records the transfer of mission from Christ as God’s only representative on earth, to his disciples as God’s representatives, anointed with the same calling and spiritual authority through the Holy Spirit.  The early church received what Jesus received so they could do what Jesus had done.  This is our legacy also.  Learn more on this week’s Thread podcast.

Thread #62: Acts: Returning to the prototype of the Church

Big Thread News!  We now have a Facebook group. And… a flashy new app in theAndroid Marketplace.  It gives access to all Thread podcasts and the ability to rate, comment and post directly via Twitter, FB and email.  Try it out if you have an Android phone.

Our new study , the book of Acts is important because it gives us a journal of the earliest attempt to live out the teachings of Jesus–the prototype.  This group understood Christ’s teachings the best because they actually knew him and had heard him teach in person.   I am certain this has happened in Christianity.  On the one hand we have the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus recorded in the gospels.  On the other hand we have a thing called Christianity which is the combination of the religion about Jesus plus culture. It exists in Catholic, Orthodox, Coptic, Protestant, Evangelical and Pentecostal versions. You have Mennonites and the Amish. Monks and Priests. Temples and churches worshipping in gymnasiums.  Each will give you their defense of why their version is correct.  What I want to make certain is that I am following the way of Jesus.  As hard as it is to do, I want to try to strip away what has grown to be Christianity and get back to the original germ of the movement.

New App and Changes to Thread!

Hi Everyone, the app is now ready!!! Looks really nice and works well too. It is available at the Android Marketplace (just search Thread by Chuck Quinley to add it). Now that we are finished with the app we are making a few changes to bring the show to a wider audience. First, it will be limited to around 15 minutes vs the 25 before. Secondly, we now have a Facebook group you can find at “Thread by Chuck Quinley.” We’d love to hear from you there.

We will soon start working our way through the book of Acts and see it as a journal of how the early church attempted to really practice the teachings of Jesus. Many of us agree that we need to re-Jesus modern day Christianity. Let’s start with the experiences of the earliest followers of Jesus. See you soon on Thread! Here’s a peek at the new artwork. Thanks to Ria Bagatsing for the skills!

Thread #60: Rethinking Missions for Our Generation

You will never have a Hindu visit your home to ask you to consider Hinduism. True Asian Buddhists, likewise, won’t ask you to commit your life to becoming a disciple of Buddha. Why do Christians feel the need to evangelize? Tune in to this episode of Thread for the answers.

Thread #59: On the Importance of Believing in a Cynical Age

We’ve all been burned. Authority figures have failed morally. Things we bought rarely lived up to the sales pitch. It’s easy to become jaded or even to keep our trust guarded. Jesus won’t allow that. He challenges his followers to choose to believe and trust God and man. Listen to this episode recorded in Tokyo, Japan, to see why choosing the posture of believing is so important in a cynical age.

Thread #58: Women and Family in the Ministry Team of Jesus

Have you ever thought about the women who have poured benefit into your life? Many of the new freedoms enjoyed by women around the world today find their beginning in the liberation Christ established for women. In this Thread we witness how Jesus honored the traditional role of women with the quality of care it brings to others, then he went beyond those roles and elevated the status and roles of women in His Kingdom. Thread#57: The Most Important Doctrine in the Bible

I’m not sure it has ever really sunk in.  I have heard what Jesus has done for me on the cross all my life but I don’t think I have ever really grasped how approved, forgiven, included and adopted I became on the cross as Jesus and I changed places that day.  It happened for you too.  Has it really freed you from approval seeking, etc.?  I would love to hear your comments on this week’s Thread.

Thread #56: The Others-focused life

How would people who know you best summarize your life’s general pattern?  ”Nice guy?”  ”She mainly kept to herself?” “He was very friendly?” “He seemed a bit uptight most of the time?”  As they mocked Jesus on the cross, even his enemies jeered, “He saved others; himself he could not save.”  Though they did not intend to, they actually validated his life with those words, “he saved others.”  Christ was other-focused every day, taking the servant’s role, even as a leader.  Learn more about ministering to the needs of others in this episode of Thread.

Thread #55: How Jesus Redeemed Our Relationship to the Government

The self sacrifice of God for mankind is the central event in human history. In the passion and on the cross, Jesus was broken and crushed by his relationship to his friends, family, religious leaders, national government, religious community and even in his relationship with God. He did all this to take our place and suffer fully the impact of sin on our lives so that we might exchange places with him and find wholeness in all these same areas. Join us in this week’s Thread podcast to learn more about what Jesus did on your behalf as he faced the government of Rome in preparation for his sacrifice on the cross.

Thread #54: Handling our own moral failures

DC talk has a song called “In the Light” with these lyrics:

“Tell me what’s going on inside of me
I despise my own behavior
This only serves to confirm my suspicion
That I’m still a man in need of a savior”

It’s hard to handle the glaring sins of others, but even worse to realize the worst about ourselves when we fail miserably to live up to our own set standards of loyalty, honor and common decency.  This is a Thread about how to avoid moral collapse and how to deal with it once you have blown it in a major way.  Don’t give up!  Peter made it and so can we. Thread #53: What to do When the Legal System Is Used as a Weapon

Even something as pure in intention as the justice system can be used by the powerful to crush the innocent.  Lawsuits, public humiliation through well-timed arrests, the seizure of assets or even one’s children–these have often been used by governments throughout the ages against the people of God. In the Soviet Union, Christian parents were deemed mentally unfit because they held to a belief in God.  Their beloved children were stripped away and placed in state orphanages unless their parents would recant.  God’s people have often been persecuted in our own generation.  In fact, over 100,000 Christians a year lose their lives through persecution according to statistician David Barrett. What should a Christian do when faced with legal harassment? When the outcome is fixed even before the trial, where can you find strength and hope?  Follow the example of Jesus in this week’s Thread podcast.

Thread #52: Keeping Your Friends Despite Their Failures
